Random maybe unlinked items
FOOD Books!
There's a new edition of Bittman with even more recipesthat I'd love to have : and it's here.
The Joy of Cooking - the 75th anv. ed just came out in 2007. Also, Stand Facing the Stove, the story of Irma Rombauer's creation of the original Joy of Cooking, as well as her struggles to get it on the market. How I Learned To Cook . Simon Hopkin's Roast Chicken and Other Stories. Julie Powell's Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously. The Professional Chef, and workbook/study guide! from the Culinary Institute of America ("Pro Chef 8"), Mitchell Davis' The Mensch Chef (available for $1.38 used!), and Cooking in 10 Minutes for its absolute simplicity ("Oysters and Sausages:Fry some chipolata sausages. Serve them very hot on a dish and on a second dish a dozen oysters.Alternate the sensations. Burn your mouth with a crackling sausage. Soothe your burns with a cool oyster. Continue until all the sausages and oysters have disappeared. White wine, of course.") and also French Cooking in 10 minutes. Tom Colicchio's Think like a chef, where he explains the mental process to cooking without recipes!!
The Doughmakers pitted 17.5 x 14. Specific request for this model (due to product testing reports).

A perforated fat skimmer (like for stocks - see pic above)
Very specific model things, from extensive Cooks Illustrated testing reviews: ThermoWorks Original Cooking Thermometer/Timer, (or the Polder Classic Cooking Thermometer/Timer for $6 more, but no added functionality), CDN ProAccurate Quick Tip Digital Cooking Thermometer DTQ450, Forschner Victorinox Fibrox 8-inch Chef's Knife, Sanyo Smokeless Electric Indoor Grill.
A re-subscription to Cooks Illustrated
-though more importantly, a [seperate]re-subscription to their website would give me way more info and awesome-tastic search ability. You can do it here, for $40, or you can gift me a check for $19.95 (current members appear to get 1/2 off) and I'll v. happily do it myself.
A progressive Alarm Clock - for a too expensive example of the concept, see .
A dawning light (slow on, full-spectrum) that has a timer (so i can get my sunshine in winter).
a tool bucket
a pizza paddle and rolling pin to go with the awesome pastry board (dad?)
cast iron sandwich press
a meat tenderizer
Massive germ resistant cutting area $24? The germ resistant part is important (called "poly" online), cuz i have a wood one that fits over the sink already (like 2-3 extra feet of counter!) So a Poly one for meat would be supurb. Finding them big enough (to go over the sink) has always been the hard part.
Covers for my cast iron pans that could also go in the oven. Maybe Lodge makes these?
martini glasses (great for pudding deserts)
a UPS (power surge protection and battery backup for computer. available at Staples, etc.)
and more to come from ikea, amazon, target, oldnavy and threadless.
